Dear Michael Hall Families,
My experience in education has taught me to expect certain cycles and patterns in how schools 'feel' at certain times. At this point in the academic year, I have been expecting (and witnessing) familiarity. It is an interesting word with both warm feelings, but the attached adage of breeding contempt.
I would suggest that un-nurtured familiarity can lead to less respectful, less caring and less growth. Somehow, we can lose sight of the individual as familiarity sets in. Nurturing growth, recognising individuality, and embracing emerging talents within a safe setting is where I see familiarity being a real strength.
In a world that often moves too quickly, we have classrooms and playgrounds that offer our children something deeply nourishing. In Michael Hall, familiarity is not simply about repetition or routine. It is a responsibility which, as teachers, we embrace the opportunities gifted to us in creating an environment in which our children feel safe, known, and connected to their teachers, their classmates, and the world around them; recognised as individuals and safe in our inclusive community.
Even the physical environment plays its part: the soft colours, the natural materials, and the rhythm of changing seasonal displays. These familiar spaces speak quietly to our sense of beauty and well-being, reminding us that the world is a good place.
Through all of this, familiarity becomes more than comfort, it becomes a foundation for growth, a freedom to change and the support to succeed. It allows our children to meet the unfamiliar with confidence and curiosity, knowing they stand on firm ground.
Warmly,
Stuart McWilliams
