27th September 2024

Dear Michael Hall Community,

This week was very eventful with a visit from Ofsted from Tuesday to yesterday and an Open Day yesterday as well! The Open Day was very well attended and it is always so lovely to see new people's reactions to our wonderful school.

Ofsted visited for three days from 8am-6pm and they have a very busy schedule. The inspectors were very professional, and it has been very interesting seeing our education through their eyes too. I'm afraid we are not allowed to give you any indication of what the outcome is until the final report comes out in a few weeks. If we do breach confidentiality, it could mean another inspection so please respect our neutrality about it until then.

Today, of course, is Michaelmas and this morning was one of our favourite assemblies with Class 11 and Class 3 working together in a play and then some traditional, and much enjoyed by the whole school, weighing up of vegetables in a giant set of scales. The younger children decide which side to put each vegetable in until the scales are balanced.  This is a reflection of the equinox on Michaelmas where light and dark are balanced but we are shifting towards shorter days. It also marks the end of blackberry season and tradition says that picking blackberries after this day is bad luck due to the devil poisoning them on Michaelmas, so it's frozen or jammed blackberries now until next year!

Wishing you all a fruitful (but not fresh blackberries) weekend.

Acting Principal

Class 12 are beginning our fundraiser for the Italy trip. We will be selling toasties in the canteen with vegetarian options starting Wednesday 2nd October every weekday up until the Christmas break. They will cost 2 pounds per toastie. Pizza is to come soon hopefully.

Toasties will be available for upper school every schoolday and for middle school will be available every schoolday excluding Wednesdays.

We would appreciate all your help as it goes to a good cause.

Many thanks, Class 12

David Smith Memorial Service: 16th November, 2pm,
Long Room, Michael Hall School

Our dear friend and teacher David Smith passed earlier this year, his funeral was held in the summer, it was attended by his family, friends, and also former pupils from across all the schools that David had taught in.

We are hosting a memorial service for David at the school this term, to remember and celebrate David's life. An afternoon of sharing our memories of David, sharing favourite music and songs of his, and a look at David's sculptural works, will be held in the school.

David's memorial service will now by on Saturday 16th November, in the Long Room, Michael Hall School. We wish to be able to enable as many of David's family, friends and former pupils from across his life, to be able to travel and attend this day.

(This is a change of date, the memorial will not be on the 28th  September)
