Friday Flyer                                                                                         17th January 2025

Dear Michael Hall Community,

This week I have news from our colleagues at other Waldorf schools. I find it so wonderful that all our schools broadly follow the same curriculum and ethos and as I see the news come in from around the world and see the other schools around the globe share students' work, I feel a sense of pride that I am part of this worldwide colleagueship and how well our education translates into different cultures as it serves children as human beings.

Firstly I have sent a warm congratulations to Hereford Steiner School who have just been ranked as No. 1 in the Fairer Schools index. This index was developed by an academic at Bristol University using a complicated set of metrics and mathematical calculation to acknowledge that different students face different challenges, rather than judging everyone by the exact same metrics. In many ways it indicates that Hereford Steiner School is the best state school in the country which is a testament to our education. You can read the article here

Secondly, I have some sad news to share as the fires rage on in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the Westside School and Pasadena Schools in LA have lost their buildings to fire and their communities have been severely disrupted. Please hold them in your thoughts as they navigate this tragedy.

Although snow is both beautifully peaceful and joyful, now it has thawed, I am very much looking forward to seeing fresh new hope when the shoots of spring appear.

Wishing you a cosy weekend.

With warm regards,

Emmeline Hawker
Acting Principal

✨ During our centenary year we are honouring our rich history, traditions, and community spirit that have shaped us over the last century.

We are excited to mark this milestone on Monday with special in-house celebrations, bringing our students, staff, and teachers together to reflect on our journey and look ahead to a bright future.

Here’s to 100 years of growth, creativity, and community—and to the next 100!

The Practice-athon begins: The Music Department has decided to take on a challenge this half term and raise some funds in support of Music for All (https://www.musicforall.org.uk/), a charity that improves access to musical opportunities for those in disadvantaged communities across the UK. With access to music lessons - let alone instruments -  a real challenge in many parts of the country, Music for All aims to help people 'experience the joy and far reaching benefits of making music'.

We thought it would be fun to challenge the children to a practice-athon: a 4 week practice marathon with the double aim of helping them build good practice routines whilst raising a small amount for a worthy cause.

The start date is up to each of our wonderful Visting Music Teachers, but if anyone learning an instrument outside of school would like to take part, do speak to the Music Department.

Candlemas Concert on 2nd February celebrating the music of 2 Alumni of Michael Hall.

Julian Rolton will be performing in a concert at the Christian Community on Sunday 2nd February that celebrates the music of 2 composer-musicians who are alumni of Michael Hall. Both of them will be participating in the concert alongside the Elgin Quartet (drawn from BBC Orchestras) and the sublime tenor, James Gilchrist, who will lead a performance of Vaughan Williams's On Wenlock Edge. James is an internationally acclaimed musician and Nick Korth, Co-Principal Horn player of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, one of the finest players around.

Please do support this venture so close to home. It will certainly be memorable. Contact details can be found on the flyer.
