Lower School curriculum themes and narrative

Lower School Faculty

To the left of the picture we see that the narrative theme of Class 1 is based on traditional fairy tales and the rich language of archetypes that is to be found within them. Moving counter-clockwise to the right, we see the Class 2 narrative themes which come from traditional animal fables that highlight possible short-comings of human activity, and stories associated with individuals who have devoted their lives to higher ideals, such as St. Francis. In Class 3, stories from the Old Testament provide the central narrative, with the examples shown being the building of Noah’s Ark and Moses. In Class 4 the narrative is based on Norse Mythology; another main theme involves understanding the human being in relation to the animal kingdom – represented in the picture by the lion, the eagle and the bull.

The narrative themes in Class 5 are taken from the ancient civilizations of India, Persia, Babylonia, Egypt and Greece. The curriculum content of Class 6 involves the transition from mythology to history and narrative themes comes from Roman culture and civilization. The Class 7 narrative is based on key figures from the Renaissance such as Leonardo da Vinci and also the Great Age of Exploration; the widening of geographic horizons corresponds to the broadening outlook of the young adolescent. Finally, in Class 8, the gradual progression of narrative finds its completion in stories of industrial, and social revolution. These themes lead to modern history and a grounded understanding for each pupil of the technological developments and historical context of the present day.
