I’d say there are few things so uplifting for the soul as being moved by the coming together of young, hopeful voices to make beautiful, resounding music; by the soloists so talented and brave to share such personal and captivating interpretations of a piece of music alone on stage, and by the clear, powerful voices speaking their prose and poetry to challenge our consciences and reveal sensitive inner worlds and beautiful hearts and minds. At the Spring Festival the Upper School students took me – us all, I think – to a higher plane, and in doing so showcased just what a rich, artistic, soulful education can do to draw out and burnish the highest human qualities in our children, to the benefit of us all. It gives hope for them, the school, and for the future.”

‘I’m writing to say what a triumph the Spring Festival was. ‘Classy’ is an understatement. I was gobsmacked by the bravery of the musical choices – is there any other school at which young people sing four-part a capella with such beauty and commitment? Or choose, as the finale to the evening, the hushed pianissimo that ends Faure’s choral piece, Cantique de Jean Racine? What a sublime and daring choice! A remarkable testament also, to the students and of course to the exceptional Mr. Rolton. At a time when live music is so marginalised and fighting for its very existence, this was a poignant and refreshing reminder of how important great music-making is for us all.
