Candlemas
Candlemas marks the first cross quarter of the year, falling exactly between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. In medieval times it was said to be the time when one no longer had to get up by candlelight, as the days were just becoming light enough to be able to see in the mornings without the aid of a candle. Old wax was collected and made into candles to be taken and blessed in church and stored ready for the following winter.
It is time to let go of the past and to look to the future, clearing out the old, making both outer and inner space for new beginnings. This can be done in numerous ways, from spring cleaning your home to clearing the mind and heart to allow inspiration to enter for the new cycle. It is a good time for making new resolutions and wish making.
There is a definite increase in energy and vitality in the children during the week of Candlemas, this correlates to the sap rising and spring awakening. It is subtle, yet very tangible, and also unsurprising, in that children below the age of seven are still so connected to the natural forces of the earth and nature.
