The study of ancient civilisations in Class 5 began with exploring the creation myth and colourful stories of ancient India. They read the Ramayana, an ancient Indian story about Prince Rama who was gifted with powers of the God Vishnu to defeat a destructive demon on earth. The class then worked hard to bring the story to life as a shadow puppet production, a traditional medium of sharing stories for thousands of years in India. They drew the characters in the story, which were turned into shadow puppets. Collaboratively the children painted the shadow puppet screen and manipulated the puppets, spoke the parts, and played the music to make it their own.
